Elko announces Mayor’s Arts Awards
Elko Mayor Reece Keener announced the recipients of the 2023 Elko Mayor’s Arts Award in a ceremony on Nov. 8. Elko Mexican Folkloric Ballet won the Arts Organization award. The group, in its 16th year and celebrated for its detailed costumes, travels annually to Twin Falls, Idaho and Wendover to perform, and is a staple at several Elko-area events. At any given time, the group has 30-70 dancers, who represent all 32 Mexican states.
Nevada Gold Mines won the Service To The Arts award. “It would be impossible to find an organization that gives more support to the arts and the entire Elko community than Nevada Gold Mines,” said Keener.
The winner for Arts Educator is Brook Lowe from Spring Creek High School, who teaches art and craft classes at the school, through summer art camps, and to scouting and church groups. She also facilitates professional learning opportunities for fellow Elko County School District art teachers.
The award for Individual Artist went to Susan Kole, who has recently painted a mural at Spring Creek Elementary School and does professional face painting at events and gatherings under the business name Cheeky Doodles.
Painter and retired Great Basin College Art Department head Patty Fox created the awards—watercolor paintings of Indian paintbrush, a wildflower that’s seen in spring throughout Northern Nevada. One of Fox’s paintings will be displayed permanently at Elko City Hall.
